| | SisterLove, Inc. July Newsletter | | We at SisterLove know that is a difficult time for everyone, particularly due to the recent spikes of COVID-19 cases in Georgia. As recently as Friday, the state broke its daily record of cases reported with over 4000 new infections. Most hospitals across the state have reported the highest numbers to date with virus patients. Hospital critical care beds are shrinking which prompted Governor Kemp to reopen the temporary hospital at the Georgia World Congress Center, which closed in May. ‘Our’ Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, who tested positive with COVID-19 last week, went further by ordering mask-wearing as a requirement in the city of Atlanta and issued an order Friday to return the city’s reopening plans back to Phase 1. There’s no denying the surge of cases has caused alarm. Clinics across the United States that provide family planning rely on Title X grants, which allow them to offer services to patients on a sliding, income-based scale. Title X grants cover a broad array of services that are considered "family planning," including contraceptive services, supplies, and information; breast and cervical cancer screenings; and STI prevention, testing, and treatment. In mid 2019, the Trump Administration instituted a nationwide gag rule on Title X funding. The new rule prioritizes natural family planning and abstinence, especially for adolescents, and imposes new barriers to abortion access. This rule is incredibly harmful and during a time when many people have lost their jobs and employee sponsored health insurance, affordable family planning is necessary. Many clinics have been forced to take less patients due to cost or shut down completely. Fill out this form to tell your representatives to reverse these changes and protect Title X | | | Contact Your Reps to Vote YES on the Global HER Act! The global gag rule, recently reinstated by the Trump Administration, is an unjust policy that disrupts the provision of reproductive health services abroad by blocking U.S. global health assistance to all foreign nongovernmental organizations that use their own funding to engage in abortion-related services or advocacy. The Global Health, Empowerment and Rights (HER) Act is a necessary bill that that would reverse and prohibit the Global Gag Rule and prevent any future president from reinstating the rule. The global gag rule is incredibly harmful for hundreds of NGOs and for thousands of people who rely on their services. The global gag rule results in increased unintended and high-risk pregnancies, unsafe abortions and maternal deaths, and harms efforts to combat HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections (STIs). During this period where access to adequate health care is paramount, the global gag rule puts more lives at risk. By filling out this form you can ask your representatives to vote for the Global HER Act to stop the global gag rule and prevent any future president from reinstating it. | | | Census 2020 Every 10 years the U.S. government conducts a nationwide census. The census is incredibly important for you and your community, because the results of the 2020 Census will affect community funding, congressional representation, and more. If the population of our community is undercounted we may lose funding for our schools, roads, and other necessities and we may lose representatives in Congress. The census is completely anonymous and you will not be penalized due to your living situation, immigration status, etc. There is NO immigration status question on the census. Although the official day to complete the census was April 1st, you can continue to fill it out throughout the summer. You should have received a census form in the mail. You can also fill out the census here. | | | | | Federal Court Rules Georgia's Heartbeat Bill Unconstitutional A judge in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, ruled that HB481, the Georgia abortion ban, is unconstitutional. HB 481 essentially banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy with few exceptions. The judge ruled in the summary judgement phase, which means that the evidence of a constitutional violation was so overwhelming that a trial would not be needed. The judge stated that the law violated a woman’s constitutional right to abortion established in Roe v. Wade, and that the “constitutional liberty of the woman to have some freedom to terminate her pregnancy” is inhibited by the law.” Georgia’s current abortion ban of 20-weeks remains in effect. This case can be appealed, and will likely be so, but overall this is a wonderful victory for Reproductive Justice advocates. SisterLove stands by its belief and commitment to the reproductive justice and freedom of all women and people of reproductive capacity. Pennsylvania, upheld a Trump Administration Policy allowing employers who have religious or moral objections to limit their employee’s access to birth control coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This new rule allows employers and other entities, for example nonprofit groups such as schools and hospitals affiliated with religious organizations, that object to birth control the right to strip away coverage without ensuring alternative arrangements for access. Between 70,000 to 126,000 women may lose access to contraception covered by their employers. SisterLove, as a Reproductive Justice organization, strongly believes that people who can get pregnant must have the right and ability to decide if, when, and how they want to experience a pregnancy. Access to safe, legal, and affordable contraception is a necessity and remains essential to historically disenfranchised communities that have been denied the health care they need. To read more, click here | | | Supreme Court Rules to Protect Abortion Access The Supreme Court handed down a victory for Reproductive Justice advocates everywhere in the June Medical Case. The Court, in a 5-4 decision with Chief Justice Roberts in the majority, chose to strike down a Louisiana law regarding admitting privileges, preventing the closure of 2 of the 3 abortion clinics in Louisiana. The admitting privilege restriction at issue required that doctors who perform abortions be able to personally provide medical services at a nearby hospital. Proponents of such laws argue they are necessary for the health and safety of women seeking abortions. In reality, few abortions require hospitalization, and doctors who perform abortions often are unable to obtain admitting privileges from nearby hospitals due to political views on the nature of their work. SisterLove, as a Reproductive Justice organization, firmly believes that all people must have the power and resources necessary to make their own decisions about their bodies, to create and choose their families, and to reproduce their communities as a whole – all with dignity, self-determination, and genuine support. The DACA Program was created under President Obama to protect mostly young undocumented children who were brought to this country by their parents. This ruling saved nearly 700,000 people, also known as Dreamers, from possible deportation to countries they barely knew. We at SisterLove are thrilled with this decision. Dreamers have contributed so much to our country already and deserve to feel secure and not fear deportation. These nearly 700,000 people are now able to continue to thrive in their home country, because home is here. | | | | | SisterLove, Inc. 1237 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. SW | Atlanta GA 30307 (404) 254-4734 | | | | | | | | | |
