Dear Democrats,

We are coming off major municipal victories across New Mexico. In 2025, 271 Democrats won local races. Our candidates didn’t just win in the places you might expect — they won in small towns and rural, traditionally red counties like Chaves and Otero. These victories mean Democrats are now in a stronger position to deliver the kind of practical, community-focused policies New Mexicans deserve.

But we cannot take our foot off the gas. We do not want to give a single Republican a free pass to run uncontested for municipal elections in 2027.

In 2025, Republicans won 235 races simply because no Democrat was on the ballot. We cannot afford to leave that kind of ground uncontested in 2027.

That’s why we are launching a new effort focused on recruiting strong Democratic candidates for down-ballot positions — including soil and water boards, school boards, city councils, and other local offices that shape our communities every day. Too often, these races go unchallenged, even in areas where Democratic values resonate deeply.

In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out with tools, timelines, and support to help county parties identify, recruit, and prepare candidates for the 2027 municipal elections. If you know someone who should consider running — or if you’re interested yourself — we want to hear from you. 

Here in New Mexico, we’re blessed to have an all-blue Congressional delegation and Democrats holding every statewide office. Because we’ve been able to elect Democrats like Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and keep large majorities in our state legislature, New Mexico has been able to protect abortion rights and reproductive freedom, protect SNAP and health care premium assistance, and provide free college and vocational training. With the good we’ve been able to do at the state level, now it’s time that Democrats start winning local and county offices with the same success.  

We’ve proven that Democrats can compete in any race in the state, even if it’s in a place normally thought of as a Republican stronghold. But our long-term strength depends on building a strong bench in every community and finding motivated Democrats willing to step up locally. 

Let’s build on our momentum and make sure that in 2027, every community in New Mexico has a Democrat on the ballot. Every New Mexican, regardless of where they live, wants lower costs of living, vibrant rural communities, and access to affordable health care. With more and more Trump voters turning on his reckless tariffs and billionaire-first agenda, Democrats have to seize this moment and build our bench to make sure every voter gets to hear from a candidate who aligns with our party’s working class message.
