“Florida becomes the GOP’s biggest redistricting test — and a messy one” — Politico
Florida Republicans had a hearing earlier this week about their forced mid-decade map redraw — one that could potentially tip the scales in their favor by three to five additional congressional seats .
Some are calling this the “crown jewel” of the recent Republican campaign to gerrymander before the midterms. And what happens could ultimately determine which party controls Congress next year.
We’re rapidly mobilizing to fight back against any attempt to gerrymander Florida’s map, but we can’t let up in combating the redistricting crisis everywhere else. Rush in your gift to help us stop Republican map manipulators from cheating their way to power. [[link removed]]
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been chomping at the bit to force through a gerrymandered map and deliver President Trump extra seats in Congress. Meanwhile, he’s looking to the U.S. Supreme Court to give him carte blanche to dilute the votes of communities of color to do it.
Just this week, Gov. DeSantis said in an interview, “ Yeah, yeah, so we’re going to redistrict. The issue is that there is a Supreme Court decision that we are waiting on — the argument in October about Section 2 of the VRA [Voting Rights Act] that impacts Florida’s maps. ”
Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act ensures that majority-minority districts have the opportunity to elect a representative of their choice. DeSantis and other map manipulators are hoping and praying that the Supreme Court guts the Voting Rights Act so they can reverse decades of civil rights gains.
One thing is clear: Florida Republicans are trying to do as much damage to our democracy as they can. As lawmakers prepare to hear public comments, we need to make clear that this is a blatant attempt to suppress the will of the people.
This blatant power grab in Florida is just the beginning of the next phase of this redistricting crisis — rush a donation right now, and let’s do everything we can to fight back. [[link removed]]
