It’s not hyperbole to say that January will be a make-or-break month for the fair maps movement. What happens over the next few months will determine whether voters will have their voices heard in the 2026 midterm elections, and far beyond. 

Here’s what’s at stake:

• The Supreme Court is poised to issue a ruling in a case that threatens  Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which prevents states from diluting votes on the basis of race. If the crown jewel of the Civil Rights Movement is gutted, we could see a rash of Republican states rushing to redistrict and dilute the votes of people of color, and we need to be prepared to respond. 
• Florida is set to push through a mid-decade redraw of their electoral maps — setting the stage for a major fight to stop this brazen attempt to steal congressional seats for Donald Trump at the expense of Floridians.
• Meanwhile, states from Indiana to Kansas are eyeing their own mid-decade redraws despite massive public backlash to these power grabs. 

Our opponents are gearing up for a major fight come January, and we have to be equally prepared.
