They actually did it.
Senate Republicans voted on Thursday to let health care premiums double for more than 21 million Americans.1 Starting January 1—less than three weeks from now.
They knew exactly what they were voting for. They knew families would be forced to choose between buying groceries and paying for health insurance. They knew people would skip doctor visits, delay prescriptions, and go without the care they desperately need. They knew it would push millions of people into financial crisis.
And they voted for it anyway.
While rent keeps climbing. While grocery bills keep rising. While working families are already stretched to the breaking point—Republicans just made it exponentially worse. All so they can keep shoveling tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations.2
This is unconscionable. This is cruel. And we have to make them pay for it.

Here's what makes this even more infuriating: We told Senate Democrats this would happen.
The grassroots built them leverage during the government shutdown fight. We created the pressure they needed to force Republicans to protect people's health care. But Democratic leadership caved without securing a single commitment to extend these subsidies.
And now? Republicans are delivering exactly the health care crisis so many of us predicted.
Premiums doubling. Coverage disappearing. Families thrown into chaos—all to fund tax cuts for their wealthy donors.3
Donald Trump and Republicans will not lift a finger to fix the crisis they created. In fact, Trump is still pretending everything is fine, claiming he'd give the economy an "A+++++" while nearly half of Americans can't afford basic necessities.4
This is what happens when working people don't have a robust opposition party fighting for us. This is what happens when our side gives away leverage instead of using it.
We cannot let this stand.
Republicans own this health care catastrophe. They cast these votes. They made these choices. And they need to face the consequences—at the ballot box, in town halls, and everywhere else they show their faces.
But that happens only if we organize, mobilize, and build the kind of movement that can actually stop Republicans and the Trump administration from screwing us.
