John,
Our names are Hayley and Sophie, and we are part of Brady’s Legal Team. We’re also both part of Generation Lockdown.
We grew up in Massachusetts, and although we didn’t attend the same schools, we have the same vivid memories of being in middle school at the time of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and high school students when the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas happened. In those two tragedies alone, 43 people — the majority children — were shot and killed while in their classrooms.
Watching kids our age and their communities be deeply impacted by gun violence, we decided to work at Brady, so we could be part of the generation that finally brings an end to the epidemic of gun violence.
As part of Brady’s Legal Team, we know that our work in the courts is essential, especially right now. Even when Congress may be gridlocked, we are able to set life-saving precedents and secure major victories against the gun industry — all while securing justice for survivors of gun violence pro bono — free of charge.
And we have had some incredible victories this year that we’d like to share with you, friend:
✅ The Supreme Court ruled that ghost guns — unserialized, home-assembled firearms — should be subject to the same regulations as traditional firearms. We filed multiple amicus briefs at various stages in the case in support of the ATF’s ghost gun rule. This decision is paramount in keeping untraceable weapons off the streets.
✅ Brady represented the City of Baltimore in a historic lawsuit against Polymer80, the largest ghost gun manufacturer in the country, and Hanover Armory, the largest ghost gun dealer in Maryland, for their roles in fueling the ghost gun crisis in Baltimore. We settled with Polymer80 for $1.2 million dollars – they have since shut down. Hanover Armory wouldn’t settle, so we proceeded to trial. After two weeks of testimony and evidence, the jury awarded the City $62 million, the largest verdict against a gun company in American history. These funds will be used to address the violence in the city and ultimately save lives.
✅ We filed a new lawsuit in Cook County, IL, against gun dealer Range USA and others whose conduct failed to recognize red flags of a straw purchase, which led to an 18-year-old getting a gun through his girlfriend and using it to shoot our client. We are hoping that this case will bring justice for our client and address the significant danger that straw purchasing poses to public safety.
We are ready to build on this success in the new year and continue to leverage the courts to hold the gun industry accountable, defend life-saving laws, and make progress toward ending this epidemic.
But we can’t do it alone. Will you consider supporting our efforts in the courts with a gift today? Your support will help us take on the gun industry, support victims and survivors of gun violence, and make communities safer. [[link removed]]

We Released a New Report Uncovering Pennsylvania’s Top Crime Gun Dealers
[link removed] [[link removed]]
This week, Brady and our partners atCeaseFirePA released [[link removed]] “Unchecked, Unaccountable, Deadly: A Handful of Gun Dealers are Fueling Pennsylvania's Gun Violence,” a new report that finds a stunning number of guns used in crimes were purchased from a minority of dealers.
Gun dealers act as gatekeepers to those looking to obtain firearms. They are on the front lines of this epidemic. But when they act irresponsibly or negligently, as our new report finds in Pennsylvania, the consequences are clear and deadly.
Our report finds that the vast majority of guns used in crimes in Pennsylvania originate from the state’s own gun dealers. In fact, three-fourths of guns recovered at crime scenes were traced back to gun dealers in Pennsylvania, and had been purchased only a few years before being recovered by law enforcement.
With lack of gun dealer oversight, businesses aren’t deterred from operating recklessly. It’s time for this to change. Learn more about in our new report, and how Pennsylvania can take steps towards regulating the gun industry and preventing gun violence before it happens. [[link removed]]

Honoring With Action: The 13th Annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence

Since 2013, our partners at the Newtown Action Alliance have convened gun violence prevention organizations, survivors, victims’ family members, faith leaders, lawmakers, and more for a powerful vigil that honors all victims of gun violence.
This year, over 160 gun violence survivors came to Washington, D.C., for the 13th annual vigil. Dr. Joseph Sakran, board chair and chief medical officer for Brady, spoke at the event about his experience with gun violence and his work as a trauma surgeon in Baltimore. And gun violence survivor Brenda Joiner, vice president of human resources and operations at Brady, also shared her story.
The vigil was a powerful reminder of how much the gun violence epidemic has taken from us all, and how many families and communities have been irreversibly affected.
Today, in honor of all lives lost to gun violence, we ask you to join us in taking action. At Brady, we rely on dedicated grassroots activists to help us change the laws, change the industry, and change the culture to end the gun violence epidemic in America. So please, consider joining a Brady chapter today. [[link removed]]

Changing Narratives to Prevent Gun Violence
[link removed] [[link removed]]
On Thursday, Brady joined violence prevention partners, practitioners, survivors, and community leaders at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Senior Combating Crime Guns Manager Allison Kaplan and Brady’s Steve Gates presented at the event to discuss how we can reframe the narrative surrounding gun violence, and focus on the root causes of this epidemic, including the role the gun industry plays in fueling violence.
Alison and Steve shared our unique “supply-side approach,” which aims to shift the burden of preventing gun violence from the communities most impacted to the irresponsible gun industry businesses that prioritize profits over public safety. When 90% of guns used in crimes are traced back to just 5% of gun dealers, it is clear that we can address the gun violence epidemic by holding these gun dealers accountable.
We thank Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for having us and look forward to future collaboration! Today, you can learn more about our Combating Crime Guns Program and our supply-side approach by listening to our podcast episode, "A Crime Guns 101.” [[link removed]]
