Good evening,
I believe that education is critical, and teachers are essential workers. Students should be able to go to school in person this fall if parents want that choice. According to recent findings, kids only account for 2% of all Coronavirus cases, and data has shown that child to child transmissions of Coronavirus rarely occur. Multiple pediatricians support sending children back to school. However, some school districts in Arizona are not currently providing the option for parents to send their children back into the classroom.
All of our schools are different and unique and have to make the best decisions for their local communities, but great strides have been taken to provide them with the resources they need to be fully operational for students. I voted in support of the CARES Act, which appropriated billions of dollars to K-12 education, colleges, and universities. In total, Arizona received $850 million to help with supporting students in both K-12 and higher education. These resources will provide schools the much-needed support to purchase technology for hybrid instruction, personal protective equipment, and other resources needed to bring kids back to school. Governor Ducey also took bold action in his June 24, 2020 Executive Order to give schools the regulatory and financial flexibilities so schools could make the necessary decisions to get students back to learning without worrying about the impacts on their budgets.
Local school governing boards are making these decisions that will impact your students now! It is crucial that these locally elected school board members hear from you. As parents, you deserve to have a say in your child’s education. I encourage you to voice your opinion on reopening schools by contacting your local school board members.
