It’s really simple: Gun laws save lives.

John,

This week, we launched our 2025 Annual Gun Law Scorecard, which grades and ranks all 50 states based on the strength of their gun laws. How did your state do?

Every year, the experts at GIFFORDS Law Center run the numbers, and every year we come to the conclusion that fewer people die from gun violence in states that pass commonsense gun safety laws. In other words, it’s really simple: Gun laws save lives.

Check out the 2025 Gun Law Scorecard and see how your state ranks.

We’ve been doing this project for 15 years now, and the results never change. Many states have stepped up to protect their residents: This year, 13 states received an A or A-. But several—like New Hampshire and South Dakota—have actively made the public less safe. Based on the latest CDC data available, of the 15 states with the highest gun death rates, 13 of them received Fs in 2025.

America’s gun violence crisis isn’t new, but it is preventable. Lawmakers must be willing to pursue the policies that save lives—which, helpfully, are the policies that the public overwhelmingly supports. (Scroll through our Scorecard to review the latest public polling on gun safety laws.)

As we head into 2026, take a look at the progress your state has made and see where there’s room to improve. Only together will we be able to combat the gun violence that plagues states across the country and save lives.

Gratefully,
Lindsay
