John,
Eight years ago, when I first ran for office, I made a promise to represent the people I was running to serve -- not put special interests or financial gain first. My wife and I divested every individual stock we owned.
We did it because trust matters, and I believed that if you want to serve in Congress, you need to put the public first -- not your stock portfolio.
This isn’t just a Republican issue -- members of my own party have also made stock trades in areas they oversee in a clear conflict of interest. For example, some in Congress bought or sold stocks in the beginning of the pandemic while the public was unaware of what was to come.
While this isn’t illegal, it is ethically wrong and erodes trust in our political institutions and leaders even further. That’s why I am proud to cosponsor the bipartisan Restore Trust in Congress Act -- legislation that would prohibit members and their families from owning, buying, or selling stocks.
Momentum is growing, but I need your support to keep up the pressure. Will you citizen cosponsor the legislation to ban members of Congress from trading stocks?
