For too long, human trafficking has been weaponized to justify harmful attacks on marginalized communities, especially Black and Brown immigrants and LGBTQIA+ people.

They say that trafficking is different. They say that traffickers must be punished with life sentences. But we know that these penalties have done little to deter trafficking. Instead, the rich and the powerful make backroom deals and avoid accountability, while the survivors are silenced and blamed. Even worse, all too often it is the survivors who are arrested as co-conspirators, perversely increasing vulnerability to trafficking rather than preventing it.

Criminalization makes everyone more vulnerable to exploitation. ([link removed]) The foster youth searching for stability and safety. The single mom trying to pay the rent. The young queer person who is just looking to live their truth. The immigrant parent working to provide safety and opportunity for their family.

We must meet survivors where they are at and support them in establishing safety and building resilience to abuse and exploitation. This means investing in affordable and accessible housing, medical care, mental health care, and childcare. This means providing stable and predictable funding for trafficking victim services. This means supporting queer and trans kids in our communities and schools.

But the Trump Administration is doing the exact opposite. They are cutting access to safe and affordable housing, food, and medical care. They are demonizing immigrants and trans people. They are refusing to fund victim services.

The Trump Administration is upholding a racist and unjust system, leaving survivors to choose between staying with their trafficker or living on the streets.

We won’t stand for it.
