For months, Trump has been working to build his personal police force, sending National Guard to cities across the country. This is not about protecting our communities, it’s about Trump asserting and abusing his power over us.
And finally yesterday, after weeks of Republican obstruction, Trump administration officials were brought in to testify at a Senate committee hearing about Trump’s illegal federal deployment of National Guard troops to American cities.1
In the United States, there are protections in place from the federal military being used for domestic law enforcement, but Trump’s deployments have blurred the lines, and we need accountability. It’s time for the Trump administration to answer for these illegal deployments and for Congress to stop this abuse of power!
Will you send a letter to your senators to urge them to support the Military in Law Enforcement Accountability Act, a critical step toward protecting the people against any president’s attempts to deploy troops for domestic law enforcement?
The Military in Law Enforcement Accountability Act, crafted by combat veteran Senator Tammy Duckworth, would draw a necessary brighter line between the military and civilian law enforcement, enhance oversight of operations that deploy the military domestically, and require federal forces to identify themselves when they are on our streets.2
Yesterday’s hearing was an important step in congressional oversight and accountability for the administration’s illegal actions, but oversight alone will not protect us from Trump's weaponization of the U.S. military against our communities. Congress must act to pass legislation that clearly restricts when and how a president can deploy the National Guard and affirms that troops do not belong in American streets.
It’s important that we leverage this moment and take action to ensure our elected leaders know we are paying attention and demand accountability. While a majority of Republican leaders timidly go along with whatever Trump says, right or wrong, it’s critical that all leaders know where their constituents stand.
Please take a moment to send a letter to your senators in support of the Military in Law Enforcement Accountability Act and to demand accountability for Trump’s illegal federal deployments and action to protect us from future abuses of power.
