The Supreme Court made a catastrophic mistake — and everyone is paying the price. Last year, in Trump v. United States, the Court handed Donald Trump absolute power, declaring that a president can essentially act above the law.
Let that sink in: a 34-count convicted felon with dozens of alleged crimes now has the Court’s blessing to ignore the rules that bind the rest of us.
And what has he done with it? Exactly what we feared.
Pardons for cronies who broke the law on his behalf. Attacks on political opponents. Denials of disaster relief based on partisan politics. Corruption disguised as “official acts.” Trump is weaponizing the presidency to reward himself, his allies, and his billionaire buddies — and the Supreme Court handed him the tools to do it.
This is not bold leadership. This is lawlessness. It’s tyranny in plain sight. Justice Sotomayor warned this ruling would be “a loaded weapon” for any president willing to put personal gain above the nation. She was right. And every day, Americans see the consequences.
The Supreme Court has failed its most basic duty: protecting the Constitution. It’s time to fix this mistake. No one — not a president, not a billionaire, not a political operative — is above the law.
