Friend — A 20 year-old US citizen and constituent of mine in Minneapolis was dragged out of a restaurant, put in a chokehold, arrested, and detained for hours before being released.
What was his crime? Looking Somali.
Over the last week we have seen ICE ramp up its racial profiling and violent attacks on Minneapolis residents.
In another incident, a US-born citizen and Somali-American woman was running errands when she was randomly jumped by ICE agents and zip-tied. They mocked her for her religious attire, touched her inappropriately, and jailed her for over 24 hours. A US citizen, 24 hours in jail.
Even those who have turned out to observe ICE activity in their communities have been attacked:
Let me be absolutely clear: ICE is a rogue gang of thugs, used by the Trump administration to enact violence against their political enemies and enforce Stephen Miller’s white supremacist immigration agenda, civil rights be damned.
Just click on one of the videos above. Look at how they go out of their way to hurt people who are exercising their Constitutional right to monitor law enforcement and film their activities.
And there is positively no doubt that Minneapolis is being targeted by ICE because Donald Trump is currently obsessed with peddling bigoted rhetoric and conspiracies about Somali-Americans.
Friend, I said during Trump’s first term that ICE should be abolished. The Democratic establishment’s failure to embrace that simple idea only enabled the second Trump administration to carry out the violence we are seeing in Minneapolis and across the country.
It is now past time for Democrats to stand together and say that this must end. ICE must be abolished if we are to ensure that no President can use immigration enforcement as a secret police force.
