Over the last several nights, the people of Portland have watched unmarked paramilitary forces invade our streets, attack protesters, and grab people off the streets into unmarked vans.

This is unacceptable. It is outrageous.

When I return to Washington next week, I will immediately file legislation--an amendment to the defense authorization bill--to stop these authoritarian tactics. No president should be sending unmarked paramilitary police to patrol streets in America, especially when local authorities have asked them to stand down.

I cannot believe I even have to say these words.

But this is where we are.

Leadership matters. Who we elect matters.

Never again let there be any doubt that elections matter.

We must eject Donald Trump from the White House. And we must take back the US Senate. That is how we will save America from the scourge of authoritarianism.
