Dear John,

Nirva sheep somehow survived on a North Carolina farm, where over 200 animals were severely neglected. We would soon find out just how courageous she had truly been.


When she first arrived at Farm Sanctuary, Nirva was so emaciated that we didn’t know she was pregnant—but our caregivers arrived at the sheep barn one morning to find a joyful surprise: little Ashley lamb, happily snuggled up with her mom and the herd.

Because Nirva clung to life, her lamb is alive and at her side today—and playful young Ashley will always be free from harm.


It’s hard to believe the horrors that loving and gentle Nirva faced on that North Carolina farm. The suffering there was so grave that the farmer was charged with 90 counts of felony cruelty.


Farm Sanctuary and several other groups collaborated to save as many lives as possible. Nirva was among the 10 sheep who found their hope and healing at our New York shelter.
