On this day in 1982, 30,000 women formed a human chain around the perimeter fence of RAF Greenham Common in opposition to the deployment of US nuclear cruise missiles. The historic Embrace the Base protest was one of many non-violent actions at Greenham and other military sites across Britain during the 1980s which inspired a new generation of anti-nuclear activists amid the threat of nuclear annihilation.

A new project by Nottingham CND has uploaded films made during this era to YouTube. The films document the group’s anti-nuclear activities, including a trespass at RAF Molesworth, another US base in Britain that would briefly house cruise missiles before the signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 1987. The INF Treaty would not have been possible without the pressure caused by the courageous actions of those in the peace movement during this time.

Today, we are in a new era of threats. US nuclear weapons are once again based in Britain, and the government is expanding its own nuclear capabilities for the first time since the Cold War. RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk received US B61-12 nuclear bombs during the summer. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer, announced Britain’s purchase of nuclear-capable F-35As, to be based at RAF Marham in Norfolk as part of NATO’s nuclear mission. This expansion was announced without any debate or scrutiny in Parliament.
