Last week, Donald Trump called Somali immigrants “garbage” [1] [2] and doubled down on policies to strip legal status from immigrants who have lived and worked in the United States for years by ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for countries such as Haiti, [3] South Sudan, [4] Venezuela [5] and more; halting and re-litigating asylum decisions in ways that threaten to send people back into horrific humanitarian crises [6]; and even detaining DACA recipients who have called this country home since childhood![7]

You read that right. Trump is taking legal status away from millions of immigrants and making them undocumented. TAKE ACTION!

America’s moms know right from wrong. We know no community should ever be called “garbage.” We know that the continued cruelty driving immigration policies that strip legal status away from immigrants, as well as raids, family separations, and racial profiling are not only wrong, but are also devastating the safety and stability of communities everywhere.

It’s time for Congress to balance compassion with security by passing two commonsense bills: The Dream Act [8] and the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act [9].

What is happening?

Last week, two important pieces of good legislation were reintroduced in Congress:

The Dream Act: Passage of this legislation is needed immediately. Dreamers have lived in the United States since they were children and know no other home. They are essential to our communities, care, education, and healthcare systems. They are caregivers, teachers, nurses, small business owners, and entrepreneurs who have contributed to our country for most of their lives. TPS recipients likewise are longtime community members who work, raise families, and keep our communities strong, yet continue to live with profound uncertainty. The bipartisan Dream Act, reintroduced by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), would finally provide Dreamers and many TPS recipients with a clear, permanent pathway to citizenship. [8]

The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act: Passage of this legislation is also urgently needed. The reports of inhumane conditions and rights abuses in immigrant detention are beyond disturbing. Reintroduced by Representatives Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) and Adam Smith (WA-09), [9] this bill would end mandatory detention (which means no right to a bond hearing to make a case for release, which is basic due process), ban child and family detention, and phase out private detention centers that profit from suffering. [10] It would also protect vulnerable people such as parents, pregnant women, LGBTQ individuals, and people with disabilities from unjust incarceration.

Both bills reflect a balanced approach to immigration. They would make our communities safer, our economy stronger, and our nation truer to our values. Passing them would mean that longtime family and community members, co-workers, and caregivers would have stability and safety in the places they call home. It would help rebuild trust, strengthen local economies, and ensure that our immigration system reflects the best of who we are as a nation.
