John, have you been wondering why states matter?
We get that question a lot. If you're here, you probably don't need much convincing, but your friends and family might. There are 3 simple reasons why taking back our democracy starts at the state level:
- Gerrymandering. State legislatures draw the district lines in 37 states, so these races are critical to securing fairly drawn districts and fighting voter suppression.
- Leadership & policy pipeline. State policy becomes national policy, and state leaders become national leaders. Over half of U.S. presidents (including Barack Obama!) started out as state legislators.
- Bang for your buck. State level campaigns are often small and under-nourished; just a few hours or a few dollars has an outsized impact.

But YOU can make a difference!
The Democrats are behind the curve when it comes to state legislatures. But the good news is, the grassroots CAN make a difference. Small dollar donations, a few hours spent phonebanking and canvassing—all of that goes a long way towards helping restore fairness to our democracy.
Now, let's get out there—it's up to us to take our democracy back.
