John,
The Senate voted and failed to pass an extension of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits1, which had been keeping health care more affordable for tens of millions of people.
This is outrageous and unacceptable. On January 1st, 93% of the more than 24 million people who get their health insurance through the ACA Healthcare Marketplace will see their premiums skyrocket.2 On average, monthly premiums will more than double―for many, costs will rise even higher than that.3 Millions will be forced to choose between their health insurance and other necessities such as food, housing, and utilities. It’s projected that 4 million will have no choice but to go without health insurance altogether.4
This isn’t over. We will continue to work towards repairing this damage, sounding the alarm about attacks on health care and other basic needs, showing how people are being harmed, and holding members of Congress accountable. You can bet they’ll continue to hear from us about skyrocketing costs of health care, food, and housing.
Together, we will hold Congress accountable to the American people and demand a health care system that puts affordable and adequate care first, not corporate profits or CEO bonuses.

The lack of a renewal of these ACA subsidies will hit people earning low incomes the hardest. A family of four earning $66,000 will see their premiums jump from $121 to $373 per month―a yearly increase of $3,025.5 Increasing those who qualified for the premium tax credits led to record ACA enrollments; now all of that progress will be erased at a time when millions are struggling with increased costs of living.
It doesn’t have to be this way, and we’re going to make sure it won’t be. We’re not giving up the fight, and we’re going to hold Congress’s feet to the fire until they act.
With your help, we’ll make sure the stories of those most affected by Congress’ failure to act are heard in Congress and in communities across the country. We can’t do this work without your help.
