Most gun stores in Pennsylvania follow the law. But a handful of dealers are supplying the vast majority of crime guns by enabling straw purchases, neglecting to run required background checks, and otherwise fueling illegal gun trafficking.
I wanted you to be among the first to see Unchecked, Unaccountable, Deadly [[link removed]] , our new report published in partnership with Brady. It found that just 66 gun dealers are responsible for the vast majority of crime guns across PA.
Yet, PA gun dealers are only inspected once every 17 years by the federal government. Punishment is nonexistent when dealers ignore our public safety laws. And the Trump Administration ended a program that shut down dealers who ignored background check laws and other protections designed to stop gun trafficking.
In PA, our sheriffs have the power to ensure rogue gun dealers are held accountable, but they’re not right now. You can change that.

In 2024, less than 6% of gun dealers were inspected. With cuts to ATF, that rate likely dropped even further in 2025.
I know we can’t expect federal law to change any time soon, but Pennsylvania can step in and fill the gap .
Sheriffs already have the authority to inspect gun dealers operating in their county . With the Trump administration cutting back on federal inspections by the ATF, it’s more important than ever that our local law enforcement ensure that gun dealers aren’t willfully breaking the law.
