John, I want you to meet Shama and Anwar.
My colleagues in Sudan first met this mother and son after they fled from violence and were forced to travel for four days until they reached her parents house.
Anwar was only three months old at the time. He became ill during the arduous journey. Shama managed to find a doctor, who was also fleeing, and she gave her son medication which relieved his symptoms. But upon their arrival in Al-Garri his health began to decline again.
That's when she took him to the IRC's medical clinic, where they did check ups, diagnosed him with malnutrition, and promptly began treatment. Gradually, Anwar's condition began to improve. Shama recalls:
"He was very skinny. He was not able to sit and was unable to move his body… Now he's much better. He's getting back to his normal self, as healthy as the rest of his siblings."
With help from compassionate supporters like you, the IRC is supporting families in Sudan by providing lifesaving screening, nutritional supplements, and medical check ups for children like Anwar.
And behind every recovery is a mother who refused to give up.
I hope you can take a minute to read the stories of inspiring mothers like Shama who are fighting to give their children a chance at health and hope.
