Dear
SPUC supporter,
We hope you'll be able to join us for a special festive edition of our Write for Life Academy’s popular online Culture Club on Monday 15th December (7.30-9.30pm).
It's a Wonderful Life:
In the first half of Culture Club, we'll be discussing the perennial seasonal classic, It's a Wonderful Life (1946), staring James Stewart as George Bailey — the good man who finds himself in a seemingly inescapable predicament, which leads him to despair and thoughts of suicide on Christmas Eve. However, his intervening guardian angel, Clarence Odbody, reveals to George all the lives he touched and what the world would be like if he had not existed.
Now considered to be one of the greatest films of all time, there have also been many accounts of depressed people being dissuaded from suicide after viewing it, and it's life affirming message seems more important than ever at a time when we are battling the imminent legalisation of assisted suicide. The movie demonstrates what the impact will be if we rob ourselves, our families and the world, of the 'greatest gift' of our lives.
We can't wait to hear what you make of it! If you haven't seen it before, or would like to refresh your memories of the movie being joining us on the 15th, then you will find it widely available at this time of year to view for free or to rent inexpensively on most popular streaming platforms.
Also in Culture Club…Sarah de Nordwall on Tolkien:
In the second half, performance poet Sarah de Nordwall will be giving an intriguing talk on how J.R.R. Tolkien's work can help inspire a pro-life culture, entitled, 'Re-Enchanting Reality - Faery as the way Back Home to Truth'.
Sarah addresses the question, how can we restore a sense of the sacred and enchanted to our view of human life? Sarah will be explaining how Tolkien’s ideas on Faery Stories and the Realm of Faery informed how he wrote the kinds of tales that millions of people return to year after year to restore their sense of joy, hope and endeavour — tales that leave one feeling more dignified and full of potential. In wonderful stories, she argues, we somehow rediscover a taste for life and the taste of life.
