Dear John
It is hard to think of a time in recent years when the British government has been doing so little to help the people of Burma.
If Min Aung Hlaing, head of the Burmese military, has a Christmas wish list of presents he wants, our Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, looks set to deliver them.
* No new sanctions for more than a year.
* More potential aid cuts on the way.
* No ban on jet fuel reaching Burma.
* Allowing the Burmese military attaché to stay in the UK.
After the coup in 2021, the British government led the world in putting pressure on the Burmese military, sanctioning sources of money and arms, and lobbying more countries to impose arms embargoes. Now the UK has gone from leader to laggard.
While the UK fails to act, the Burmese military keeps killing.
Burmese military columns trying to retake parts of Burma freed from their control are indiscriminately attacking and killing civilians. They arrive at villages and start burning homes.
In Sagaing region in central Burma a further 35,000 people were forced to flee their homes during the first half of November because of Burmese military attacks. This is a part of the country where the Burmese military has destroyed almost 60,000 houses since the coup in 2021.
The Burmese military has lost control of almost all of Rakhine State, and has responded not just with airstrikes, but also an aid and trade embargo, aiming to starve people into submission. Families are facing starvation; parents are forced to watch helplessly as their children slowly starve.
The bombs that drop, the planes that drop them and the fuel they fly on are all either bought from other countries or paid for by trade with other countries. Concerted international action can help cut the money and arms going to the Burmese military.
At the moment, it seems like Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper can’t be bothered to try.
We have to make her try.
We need to mobilise pressure from the public, Parliament, and in the media to force the Foreign Secretary to act.
We have done this before. We know how to run effective campaigns. We have the skills, the experience and the determination. But we don’t have the money we need, which is why we need you to add Burma Campaign UK to your Christmas gift list, and make a donation today. Thank you

Director
