The Trump administration has ordered that all hospitals immediately stop sending vital coronavirus data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and instead, submit the information only to a central database at the Department of Health and Human Services. The daily reports are considered essential for tracking the spread of the virus across the country, a primary mission of the CDC.
As a scientist, I know that keeping crucial data out of the hands of public health experts at the CDC is dangerous. But once again, this administration has taken steps to politicize the handling of this crisis by withholding critical reports.
What’s equally, if not more concerning to me right now, is the fact that Trump aides have painted Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases, as a political opponent rather than a trusted resource.
As the Trump administration continues its assault on science and reality, my opponent and one of Trump’s most zealous supporters in the House, Lee Zeldin, remains silent, embracing the White House’s failed Coronavirus response -- and that’s exactly why I am in this race to defeat Zeldin this November.
I have spent my entire career analyzing facts, following the data, and finding real-life solutions to complex problems. Suffolk County voters have a choice between a leader who trusts science and a hyper-partisan GOP pawn. Zeldin has continuously cheered on the president, mirroring his anti-science messages while lauding Trump for his disastrous response to the pandemic, a response that continues to put our health and economy at risk.
We MUST defeat Zeldin this November and put an end to the politicization of science -- that's why my team has built the strategy to put my pro-science message in front of every voter we need to flip NY-01.
But the GOP bosses in Suffolk County are ALREADY attacking us -- and national Republicans, corporate PACs, and far-right groups are helping Zeldin stockpile money to secure his re-election this fall.
The good news is that my background and strong message on science provide a clear contrast with Zeldin. We can beat one of Donald Trump’s most loyal science-denying puppets in the House if we can put our message in front of voters across New York’s 1st District and correct Zeldin’s spin and lies.
