Today, the Senate is voting on a Democratic proposal to protect millions of Americans from rising health care costs.
Over the summer, Republicans in Congress found the time to extend tax breaks for billionaires, but they refused to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies that made premiums cheaper. Now, they’re letting these tax credits expire altogether.
That means millions of Americans -- including thousands of families in Hawai‘i -- are receiving notices that their monthly premiums will rise by hundreds, even thousands of dollars. It’s the biggest percentage increase in 15 years.
Democrats want to solve this crisis because we care about the people we represent, even if most Republicans don’t. The health care fight is a fight for all Americans -- to lower costs and make sure people have good coverage. The fight will continue, but it will take more democrats to solve it.

This is important: if Republicans get their way, they would allow the ACA tax credits to expire.
Millions of families will be right back where they were before the ACA -- a time when people with preexisting conditions had to pay more or lose coverage altogether. It will be even harder for people to get care at all let alone the quality care they deserve.
This isn’t a political talking point. It’s the reality tens of millions of Americans are facing.
We are going to keep fighting to try to salvage this situation for the tens of millions of Americans who are going to see their health care costs double. We are working to avoid all this pain and stop it before it happens.
