Dear John,

On Friday, Congressman John Lewis passed away. He was a civil rights hero, a guiding light for Georgia, and, on a personal note, a dear friend for over fifty years.

John dedicated his life to freedom, justice, opportunity, and peace for all of humanity. Every time we engage in protest, patriotic dissent, or voting in the face of suppression, we have John Lewis to thank for paving the way.

Many of John’s colleagues in the Civil Rights Movement had their lives cut tragically short. John lived every day knowing it was a possibility. But he lived. He lived to watch Barack Obama become our first African American president. He lived to watch millions demand justice for George Floyd. He lived to mentor the next generation of leaders and he never stopped working, for he knew our work was never done.

I am blessed to have served alongside John in the House of Representatives for almost three decades. Our country and the world are blessed for his service and sacrifice for over six decades. I share my deepest condolences with his beloved family, and with a nation that will be forever changed.

John called his work “good trouble.” As we carry on his legacy, may we continue to make “good trouble” in our long road to freedom.

Rest in paradise, John Robert Lewis. May God bless you.

Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
