John,
Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we remember the tireless path towards women’s suffrage and long-fought battles that continue over the Equal Rights Amendment. These battles are far from over, and it's on all of us to remain vigilant and keep pushing for full participation in the social, political, and economic life of our country -- for all genders.
On January 21, 2017, I watched the great women of this country organize, march, and exercise their right to peacefully assemble against forces meant to oppress and hold them down. Watching the strong, independent women in my life speak their truths and stand up for the rights that their mothers and grandmothers struggled to achieve was one of the biggest motivating factors that pushed me to move back to my roots and ultimately run for Congress.
The fight for equality didn’t end with the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, and it’s not over today. While the marches around the world were a historic moment in history, what matters most is what we do when the demonstrations are over, what we do when the headlines pass and the world's eyes aren’t focused on these important issues.
We must have meaningful policy change in this country. For this, to honor my grandmother, mother, sister, my nieces and all of the influential women of my life, I want to be on the front lines of fighting for equality and justice for all people in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District.
Standing tall for all,
J.D. Scholten
