Threats to redwood forests and the animals that live among them have intensified. Now is the time to speak up.
The Department of the Interior has just unveiled four harmful proposals that could dismantle the Endangered Species Act (ESA), our nation’s most powerful safeguard for vulnerable wildlife and their habitats.
What’s at stake? If enacted, these proposals would:
• Remove automatic protections for species listed as threatened
• Shrink the definition of “critical habitat”
• Make it easier for development and extraction projects to override conservation needs
• Limit protections against future threats
Habitat loss is the greatest danger to wildlife, and weakening the ESA puts redwood ecosystems in jeopardy. Thousands of species—including endangered northern spotted owls and Humboldt martens—call these forests home. If these proposals move forward, future protections for redwood landscapes could vanish, leaving forests vulnerable to unchecked degradation.
