Early this morning, on International Human Rights Day, the Alberta government has chosen to attack fundamental human rights that have been protected under the Charter by passing Bill 9 into law, using the notwithstanding clause to strip protections and entrench restrictions on the rights of trans and gender diverse young people. This unprecedented action denies access to
critical health care, erases 2SLGBTQI identities from schools, and bars trans women and girls from sports, all while preventing courts from striking down these attacks on charter violations. Bill 9 additionally imposes invasive requirements on all women and girls in Alberta, forcing them to disclose sensitive personal information and subjecting them to ongoing scrutiny of their bodies to participate in sports.
Alberta has chosen to cause irreparable harm and institutionalize discrimination. Everyone, across the country, should be outraged.
This legal fight is not over.
