Dear Friends,
Late last night, civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis departed from this life, but the impact he left behind will never be erased.
Rep. Lewis was an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. In the face of adversity, as a young Black man in America during peak racial segregation, John was one of the “Big Six”, alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — a group of brave pioneers who are recognized for leading the civil rights movement.
One of John’s famous quotes was: “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” John knew all about good trouble, having been arrested over 40 times in his fierce pursuit for social justice. He was a fearless and courageous champion when it came to fighting for equality.
The first time I had the honor of meeting John Lewis, he was here in Santa Fe on a Democratic House retreat — he was peaceful, thoughtful, and sincere. I was fortunate enough to meet him a second time at a Democratic Secretaries of State event where my mother and son, Max, joined me.
I will never forget how John’s kindness beamed down on my little boy that day, and I could see how special he made Max feel. With my mom, John could sense that she was feeling overwhelmed (a bit star-struck from meeting one of her heroes!), so he grabbed her hand for this photo in comfort.
I’m beyond grateful to have shared these moments with him, and we will cherish these memories, as well as all of the powerful contributions he’s made to our country, to justice, and to democracy.
As a nation, we must honor John’s legacy by continuing his great work in these values. John Lewis will not be forgotten and will remain an inspiration for generations to come. He will be greatly missed.
May he rest peacefully,
Maggie
