Late last night we lost an icon of the Civil Rights Movement and a true American hero, Congressman John Lewis.

But Congressman Lewis did not live his life focused on being a hero — he lived his life showing us what heroism looks like. Caring, compassionate, thoughtful, respectful, selfless.

From his march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Mississippi, to his last days fighting for justice and equality in the law, Congressman Lewis demonstrated the kind of leadership that makes our nation great.

We need more leaders like Congressman Lewis.
