Friends,

I wanted to make sure you heard the news: Today, I announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration challenging President Trump's new policy that will allow for the indefinite detention of children in inhumane conditions.

President Trump's administration is intentionally subjecting asylum-seeking kids to outrageous conditions and then placing them around the country. As we welcome hundreds of these kids into Washington state, their trauma is rippling through our communities and our schools.

Kids placed in Washington state told state employees heart-wrenching stories. They reported that:

• food was tossed on the floor for the kids to fight over;

• they had no privacy, beds, or pillows;

• they were not given the chance to sleep for more than a few hours in a row before they were intentionally woken up by guards;

• lights were kept on 24 hours a day;

• they experienced freezing temperatures, and the few children with extra clothes had those clothes confiscated;

• they were not given soap, towels, toothbrushes, adequate sanitary pads, or access to showers;

• younger children were sometimes isolated in small metal cages if they misbehaved.

The Trump administration is seeking to legitimize this shameful conduct through their new policy and take away our ability to expose these immoral conditions.

The Trump administration doesn't want anybody -- the courts, the states, or the public -- to see the trauma they're intentionally inflicting on children. If they're successful, our state will lose its oversight role of facilities where kids are indefinitely detained, and the courts' oversight will be severely restricted, making it harder to shine a light on this cruelty.

There are times in our nation's history that we look back on -- like the internment of Japanese-Americans or the break-up of Native American families -- and we wonder how people of that time could have allowed that to happen. I have no doubt that our kids, including my own, will look back on what has happened during this administration and be ashamed. They will wonder what we did to stop it.

I am here to say that Washington state wants no part of this. Our goal is to put a stop to this immoral and illegal policy.

This is our 47th lawsuit against the Trump administration, and our fourth in just the last two weeks. President Trump shows a blatant disregard for the rule of law. Nowhere is that more clear than in our undefeated record against him in court: 21-0.

More updates to come soon.

Bob
