Charter school performance information is important for students, parents, and communities when making decisions about K-12 education. The Washington Student Achievement Council, in partnership with the State Board of Education, undertook the 2025 Charter School Report to provide insights into the overall performance of charter schools in Washington. This evaluation compares students from charter schools against academically, ethnically, and economically similar students from other public schools.
*Key findings from the report include:*
* On average, charter students outperform their peers in other public schools on standardized assessments of English Language Arts (ELA) and math.
* Many historically underserved groups earn higher standardized test scores than their peers. For example:
* Girls, Black, and Latinx charter students outperform their public school counterparts on ELA and math tests.
* Students with disabilities in charter schools outperform their public school counterparts on ELA tests.
* Charter students eligible for free- and reduced-price lunch saw greater improvements in their math test scores than non-eligible charter students.
Higher test scores among charter school students, especially for historically underserved groups, suggest that charter schools offer a viable pathway for enhancing student outcomes. These results align with findings in previous reports that show Washington charter school students perform at or above the level of their other public school counterparts.
