FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington - July 18, 2020 — Freedom House mourns the death of Congressman John R. Lewis and issued the following statement:
“The United States has lost one of its greatest champions for freedom and equality,” said Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House. “Congressman Lewis’s tenacity and bravery helped catalyze momentous change. His example of peaceful resistance to injustice and oppression has inspired human rights activists and defenders of freedom around the world. As the United States continues to grapple with the legacy of slavery and unequal treatment of Black people, Rep. Lewis's death is a stark reminder of how much work remains to achieve the ideals set forth in our founding documents, ideals for which Rep. Lewis fought his entire life.”
