John,

Three years ago, I made a commitment to the people of Missouri’s First District. Three years ago, I decided to take my fight from the streets of Ferguson to the halls of Congress. Do you know why?

After the Ferguson Uprising, and just a few months before yet another local officer was acquitted for murder, members of my community asked me to run for this seat. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I never intended to run for office. As a nurse, a pastor, a single mom working mostly low-wage jobs—I couldn’t be farther from a career politician.

But then I thought back to our days on the frontlines of Ferguson. I thought about the crowds of people who took to the streets. We were all just regular, everyday folks who were sick of Black lives not mattering to those with power. And we deserved better.

By then, the incumbent had represented Ferguson for over 15 years—and out of the 400 days we spent on the ground, he only showed up for us once. Once.

So I decided to run.

We need a Congressperson that puts their constituents first. We need a leader with the political courage to stand up and say:

We cannot allow this in our community. I will not allow this in my community.

You will not shoot rubber bullets at my people.
You will not let dogs loose on my people.
You will not brutalize my people.

But incumbent Rep. Clay didn’t do that. Why? Because he’d already signed off on the militarization of our police forces just two months before Mike Brown was killed.

I’ve faced down riot cops more times than I can count. I’ve treated people brutalized by police. My priority is to serve the people of St. Louis. And that’s why I will always stand up for what’s right—not just what’s popular.

Now, after 20 years of complacency, it’s our time. This is OUR moment. We are so close to a victory for this campaign and our entire district. Together, we will make history. Are you with me?

Solidarity,

Cori Bush
