John,
Last week, my campaign sent out a survey asking how rising health care
costs are affecting you and your families. With key subsidies in the
Affordable Care Act expiring, costs are rising for millions — and it was
important to me to hear directly from the people impacted about what that
will mean.
In total, over 72% of the people who responded to the survey confirmed
that their costs have gone up this year, and many said their costs will
increase even more in the new year.
In response to these cost increases, some families are downgrading their
coverage, others are cutting back in other areas, and some are dropping
their insurance altogether. Here are just a few of the stories people
shared:
* “Our premiums will jump from $565 to over $2,000 per month. We will
stay insured, but it’s eating into our retirement savings.”
* “It puts a strain on the everyday necessities.”
* “We have to reduce heat in several rooms and use more blankets.”
* “I can’t afford my health care costs despite having insurance, and
have to put off necessary medications, procedures and visits.”
John, this is the
reality that millions of people across this country are facing. While
insurance and pharmaceutical companies are making higher profits than
ever, working people are skipping doctor’s visits, cutting back on their
grocery budgets, and eating into their savings just to pay for the care
they need.
In the wealthiest country in the world, this should not be happening.
That’s why I’m fighting so hard to make Medicare For All a reality. But I
can’t do it alone — it’s going to take a nationwide movement to take on
and defeat the corporate interests who are propping up and profiting off
of the current system.
