Firearms are now the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, which is a devastating reminder of what is at stake. At the same time, the data is clear that states with strong firearm safety policies have lower rates of gun deaths, including among children.
Across the country, advocates have helped pass many new firearm laws at the state level since the Sandy Hook tragedy, including background checks, extreme risk protection orders, and safe storage policies. These are not symbolic victories. In places that have adopted stronger standards, fewer families are experiencing the worst possible outcome.
Our continued progress has faced direct opposition where courts are being flooded with challenges to firearm safety laws. Since the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision in 2022, there have been more than 2,000 challenges to firearm regulations in federal courts, many brought on by groups that want to weaken regulation and overturn common sense protections.
We have come too far to let that happen.
