Since taking office in January, I’ve heard from many Hoosiers about the sharp rise in spam calls and text-message scams. These schemes aren’t harmless annoyances. They’re run by organized foreign criminal networks — including groups backed by the Chinese Communist Party.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that Americans lost $195.9 billion to scams in 2024. Indiana ranks second in the nation for states most targeted by phone and text message scams 

Last week, my bill — H.R. 5490, the Dismantle Foreign Scam Syndicates Act — passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously. It establishes the first federal interagency task force focused on dismantling these networks.

This work has to be bipartisan. The criminals behind these scams don’t care about party labels.

I’ll keep pressing this issue in Washington and leading the national effort to shut these operations down.
