An Enduring Truth in the Face of an Uncertain Future

For the Winter issue of Sierra magazine, we welcomed Rosario Dawson -- a film and TV actor and producer as well as an environmental activist -- as guest editor. This edition's theme is endurance, an acknowledgment of the many challenges our communities and our planet face and the inspiring ways people are responding. As Rosario writes in her editorial, endurance is both personal and ecological -- a living practice and a communion between humans and the land. "If you find yourself struggling … right now, you are not alone."

Read Rosario Dawson's reflections on how we can build stronger connections through shared purpose and shape the future together.

Protect Our Oceans From Offshore Drilling

Donald Trump and his corporate donors are on a mission to sell our lands, waters, and public resources to the highest bidder. That's exactly what they are planning to do with America's precious coastal waters. The Trump administration just announced a new five-year plan to expand offshore drilling. It's every bit as bad as you'd think, opening up coastal waters that haven't been leased in decades.

Help us sink this plan by submitting a comment before the January 23 deadline!

Turn Your Yard Into an All-Inclusive Bird Resort

During the winter months, many of us have fewer gardening opportunities outdoors. Now might be the perfect time to prioritize making a home for local birds. It sounds simple, but just as we're often sold unhealthy food, many companies sell bird feed that's not good for birds at all.

Get our downloadable guide with tips for creating a backyard bird sanctuary that's healthy and safe for your avian neighbors!

Farmworkers Brave Deadly Heat, Pollution, and ICE Raids

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Joshua Tree National Park, and the city of Palm Springs draw visitors from around the world. But many tourists who pass through this region never see the cluster of sparsely populated, unincorporated communities -- among the poorest in Southern California -- in the Coachella Valley's southeastern corner, where farmworkers struggle to make ends meet. Luckily organizations like Alianza Nacional de Campesinas are stepping in to help.

Learn how communities take care of their own -- helping farmworkers tackle problems including sexual harassment, wage theft, pesticide-related illnesses, and heat stress.

A Montana Utility's Coal Addiction Costs Ratepayers Millions

While coal plants make electricity more expensive for ratepayers, keeping them open benefits investors. Almost two decades ago, Montana regulators approved a plan to overcharge customers in an effort to keep a prominent coal plant open.
