This week, Free Press launched our newest report: Chokehold: Donald Trump’s War on Free Speech & the Need for Systemic Resistance.

In this wide-ranging analysis, we examine more than 500 actions from the Trump administration that weaken our First Amendment freedoms. We found that the sheer amount of incidents serves as a smokescreen, helping ensure that even the most egregious actions quickly fall out of the news cycle and public consciousness. This is an unprecedented attack on our democracy, and it must be treated as such.

None of this is accidental. We’re observing high levels of coordination among the White House, government agencies and Trump allies in the media. Their playbook is to lie, distort reality and intimidate anyone who doesn’t bow down to the administration.

The report is a comprehensive examination of the sectors under attack — including but not limited to members of the media — and the methods the administration uses to chill free speech. Chokehold gives us a roadmap for challenging unconstitutional and dangerous acts that strip us of our basic freedoms.

So if you take anything away from Chokehold, let it be this: When more and more people speak out against injustice, the collective drumbeat can more easily withstand government retribution.
