It's the holiday season and OCCRP is doing what we do best: compiling a nasty list of the world's most powerful crooks.

First up? Two brothers from Lebanon. One became prime minister. The other presided over the family’s business empire. While their country's economy collapsed — banks frozen, savings wiped out, ordinary people unable to access their own accounts — the brothers were allegedly funneling stolen public money through offshore companies and buying up properties in the French Riviera.

They thought no one would notice. They were wrong.

OCCRP helped report on the corruption and this fall, French law enforcement opened an investigation into their finances. Now the brothers are dealing with prosecutors while the rest of us drink cocoa and enjoy a silent night.
