Dear John,
It is too hard and costly to get things built in New Zealand, and the Resource Management Act is a big reason why.
So, we are scrapping it and replacing it with a new planning system built on the idea of private property rights.
The new planning system will save ratepayers and taxpayers $13.3b by only regulating what is necessary and reducing the number of consents by up to 46% every year.
The economic benefits of this new system are significant. Independent analysis shows the new planning system is projected to boost GDP by an additional 0.56 per cent every year by 2050, worth up to $3.1 billion annually.
That means more growth and higher living standards for New Zealanders. It means unlocking more housing across New Zealand, speeding up critical infrastructure like roads, energy projects, hospitals and schools and backing our world-class farmers and growers to get on with doing what they do better than anyone else.
National is ending the culture of ‘no’. It's a critical component of our long-term plan to fix the basics and build the future.
