Dear Community Partner,
Are you worried about how extreme weather events, such as heat waves, storms and floods, could affect the financial security of the communities you serve? You are not alone. In 2024, severe weather events in the U.S. caused an estimated $182.7 billion in damages, resulting from 27 separate billion-dollar disasters. This made 2024 the fourth-costliest year on record for such disasters, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.
The increasing frequency and intensity of these disasters disproportionately affects individuals and families with low to moderate incomes (LMI). They face numerous challenges, including income loss, property damage, housing vulnerabilities, rising expenses, and health risks. Navigating the aftermath of these events can be overwhelming for LMI consumers, especially when it comes to securing housing and managing complex FEMA and insurance claims. Addressing these issues is urgent.
We invite you to join us on Tuesday, Dec. 9, for a 90-minute webinar where we will explore the severe financial impact of climate-related events on LMI consumers, including challenges such as loss of wages and housing and having to deal with FEMA and insurance claims. We will also discuss how community organizations can better prepare to assist consumers in navigating these difficulties.
Our esteemed guest speakers for the webinar include Maya Pendleton, senior research manager at SaverLife, and Brittany Perrigue-Gomez, disaster benefits team manager at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. Their expertise will provide invaluable insights into the topic.
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 10:00 a.m. PT (11:00 a.m. MT; 12:00 p.m. CT; 1:00 p.m. ET)
