The Scalise Capitol Report

Welcoming Vice President Pence to Louisiana

I joined Vice President Mike Pence, Governor John Bel Edwards, members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, and members of the Louisiana Congressional Delegation during the Vice President's visit to Louisiana, which included a roundtable discussion at LSU's Tiger Stadium to discuss the state's response to COVID-19, safely reopening America’s schools, and university sports programs.

During his visit to Louisiana, Vice President Pence announced a revolutionary new COVID-19 testing initiative that will provide rapid response COVID-19 testing to every nursing home across the country. This increased testing for seniors and staff in nursing homes nationwide is a game changer and prioritizes the protection of our most vulnerable from COVID-19.

Meeting with FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor

This week, I joined FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor for a tour of Holy Cross School to highlight their rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

Modernizing the Outdated National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

This week, President Trump announced the final rule to modernize NEPA regulations which will cut down on outdated, bureaucratic red-tape obstructing critical national and local infrastructure projects. Energy infrastructure, coastal restoration, and flood protection projects in Louisiana and across the country have long been delayed by a NEPA process that has become overly complex and burdensome.

Instead of years-long reviews that produce 600+ page documents, these updated regulations will lead to more shovels in the ground on projects that will benefit Americans’ everyday lives.

Community Updates

  • Four principles for a safe recovery: I opened this week’s Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis hearing on "Responding to Our Nation's Economic Crisis" by outlining four guiding principles for a safe American recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. America must continue to forge ahead with our can-do attitude and find practical solutions to the challenges that must be solved.

  • Louisiana flood protection: I joined my colleagues Rep. Garret Graves and Rep. Cedric Richmond to secure a critical Louisiana flood protection provision in the 2020 WRDA bill to ensure states who experienced certain Army Corps of Engineers project delays will have the ability to hold the Corps responsible, ensuring necessary flood protection and coastal restoration projects are delivered in a more timely and affordable manner.

  • Safely reopening schools: This week, I joined Fox News Channel’s The Ingraham Angle to stress the importance of safely reopening our schools in order to protect the development and welfare of our students, and as a critical component for getting America back on its feet.

  • Preparing for natural disasters: The CDC launched a Natural Disasters, Severe Weather, and COVID-19 response website, which includes information to plan and prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Disinfect against COVID-19: Wechem, a local business located in Harahan, Louisiana, offers several EPA-registered disinfectants that are approved for use against COVID-19.

  • COVID-19 vaccine development: The Trump Administration’s Operation Warp Speed continues to make advancements towards developing and manufacturing a COVID-19 vaccine as quickly as possible. Click here for an update on this project.
