The situation: Trump’s EPA is gutting a Biden-era protection that limits fine-particle pollution — microscopic soot that comes from oil refineries, power plants, and vehicles. This pollution invades the bloodstream and leads to heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer, and asthma.

Why it matters: The Biden administration strengthened these protections to finally address the pollution burden placed on vulnerable communities who have been breathing dirty air for generations. The benefits were undeniable, and the science was clear.

What the data shows: The EPA's own analysis showed this rule would prevent 4,500 premature deaths by 2032.

But fossil fuel companies and Republican attorneys general fought to stop it. And Trump’s EPA just sided with them by refusing to defend these life-saving protections in court.
