Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Dear Friend,

In my first year as General Secretary of CND, I have been deeply moved by the incredible wealth of experience, knowledge, dedication and commitment of our members. From the vibrant protest against nuclear submarines at HMS Devonport, in spite of the stormy weather, to the powerful anniversary events marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings, I have been constantly inspired by the strength and endurance of our movement.

However, the threats to humanity and the challenges to the peace movement are increasing on every level and it is vital that we do everything we can to strengthen CND’s campaigning ability. I ask for you to consider donating to CND's Winter Appeal to help us raise £20,000, to help meet these challenges.

This year, we are – yet again – witnessing the growing threats of nuclear weapons being used. And here in Britain, for the first time since the end of the Cold War, the government is expanding its nuclear capability, with the purchase of nuclear-capable fighter jets to be stationed at RAF Marham. This means Britain will be able to launch nuclear weapons from both the sea and sky.

At the same time, there is overwhelming evidence that deadly US nuclear bombs are now stationed at RAF Lakenheath. This marks the first time since the Cold War that NATO has increased its nuclear weapons in Europe.  A single US warhead launched from one of these new ‘nuke jets’ could destroy 600,000 lives and release toxic radiation that could pollute the environment for centuries. Far from making us safer, this dangerous nuclear escalation only increases the chances of nuclear war. This would be catastrophic for both people and planet.

CND has been working hard to build opposition to this nuclear threat. With your support, we can build upon these achievements in 2026. Next year, we aim to:

  1. Build opposition to Britain’s nuclear expansion with national demonstrations at key nuclear bases including RAF Marham, RAF Lakenheath, and supporting critical actions at the Faslane nuclear base in Scotland and the Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment that is developing new nuclear warheads.
  2. Supporting the development of new research to show the economic and social benefits of transitioning jobs away from the nuclear industry.
  3. Grow our network of local CND groups and activists across the UK, in order to build grassroots support for the anti-nuclear movement.
  4. Working with local groups to organise public debates to build support across the country for an alternative to nuclear war and militarism - and to strengthen local activism.
  5. Build diplomatic support for defending and strengthening global arms control treaties by working to ensure a strong, coordinated delegation to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York.
  6. Helping increase access for younger campaigners to participate in actions and events, building a new generational of activists to strengthen CND’s campaigning work.

Together we can, and we will, bring about a more peaceful, anti-nuclear future.

In peace,
Sophie Bolt
General Secretary
