On December 1, the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD) joined state leaders, community partners, and disability advocates to celebrate the official naming of the new Justin Dart “Lead On!” Transit Station in the Texas Capitol Complex. The event honored the legacy of Justin Dart Jr., whose leadership and determination significantly shaped disability rights in Texas and across the nation. Justin Dart Jr is often referred to as the Godfather of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for his essential role in its passage. His famous speeches were often concluded with the rallying charge “Lead on!”
The naming of the station was authorized by Texas Senate Concurrent Resolution 32 (2025) [ [link removed] ], authored by Senator Bob Hall and Senator Sarah Eckhardt, with Representative John Bucy III serving as the House sponsor. Their bipartisan effort recognizes Justin Dart’s lasting contributions and ensures his message of “Lead On!” continues to inspire future generations.
This transit station was built as a collaboration between GCPD, the Texas Facilities Commission, and the Texas State Preservation Board. The fully accessible Lead On! Transit Station provides the most accessible path of travel to welcome visitors to the capitol.
The commemoration brought together representatives from state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and members of the public who have been impacted by Dart’s work. Attendees heard remarks honoring his advocacy and reflecting on how the ADA and related work continue to strengthen opportunities for Texans with disabilities.
The new transit station stands as a visible reminder of progress and the importance of ongoing commitment to accessible infrastructure. Click on this link to view photos from the event [ [link removed] ].
GCPD extends sincere thanks to everyone who joined us and supported this celebration. The strong turnout and positive community response reflect Justin Dart’s enduring influence in Texas. His message lives on in the work we do every day.
"Lead On, Texas!"
