As we approach the end of 2025...

A big thank you to all our amazing friends, partners and colleagues working to improve access to reproductive health and rights, in some of the most restrictive settings in the world.

In the past year, SAAF grantee partners have supported an incredible 93,309 people to access safe abortion options and trained 8587 health care workers on providing stigma-free high-quality abortion care. Working on abortion is not always easy, but you are making a difference.

Positive abortion news from 2025

We know that this year has involved many struggles for those working towards peace and realizing human rights. As we end 2025 we wanted to share some positive and hopefully inspiring examples of changes brought about by reproductive rights advocates. We hope this can be a reminder that together we really can make progress.

* Another five states in Mexico have legalised abortion on request in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This makes a total of 24 states ([link removed]) now in line with the precedent set by the Mexican Supreme Court which unanimously ruled that penalising abortion at any stage of pregnancy is unconstitutional.

* In Rwanda, young people's access to a whole range of sexual and reproductive health services was made more accessible when the legal age to access information and services was lowered from 18 to 15 years old. Read more ([link removed]) from SAAF grantee partner MDFC.

* A girl who was denied safe abortion care in Malawi won her court case and the right for young people to access abortion in cases of sexual violence was affirmed by the judge in a landmark ruling ([link removed]) .

* Reforms are underway to amend the Termination of Pregnancy Act in Zimbabwe to expand the grounds for safe abortion, and make care more accessible. SAAF grantee partner Zi-Safe has written about this important moment. ([link removed])

* A number of countries in Europe have also improved their abortion laws this year. In England and Wales, people who terminate their pregnancies will no longer face criminal penalties ([link removed]) . Luxembourg has removed mandatory waiting periods and is working to enshrine the 'freedom' to have an abortion in its constitution ([link removed]) . Denmark has expanded abortion access ([link removed]) , and just last week, the Faroe Islands voted to legalise abortion ([link removed]) up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.
