John -- Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26. It commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which gave (white) women the right to vote. While this is something to celebrate, people of color, including indigenous Alaskans, could not vote until much later. Also these days women's rights are at risk like never before: Last month, Governor Mike Dunleavy used his veto power to strip $335,000 from the Alaska Supreme Court's budget as punishment for the court reaffirming a woman's right to choose. And just last week, Trump's administration forced Planned Parenthood out of federal funding for the program that provides access to birth control, cancer screenings, pregnancy tests, and STI treatment for millions of low-income women and patients across the country. Al and I are both doctors. He's an orthopedic surgeon and I'm a pediatrician. We both understand how complex medical decisions are best made between patients, their families, and their doctors. We will always fight to protect a woman's right to choose. We also understand how the high cost of healthcare in Alaska hurts your wallet and harms our economy. Ninety-nine years ago we gained the start of a voice in our democracy. Now it's never been more important for us to rise up and be heard. That's why I'm urging you to help us fight back on Women's Equality Day.
