To Ashleigh, her mother’s crime and its aftermath came out of nowhere, like a sudden, shocking nightmare. Everything about Ashleigh’s life in Cocoa, Florida, had seemed healthy and stable. Her parents loved and cared for her and her older brothers. They went to church as a family every week.


Then when Ashleigh was 8 years old, her mom was arrested and sentenced to 37 years in prison for a serious offense that she had kept hidden from her family.


Ashleigh’s mother was now hours away in prison, and Ashleigh wasn’t even allowed to visit. She had a difficult time accepting and navigating this new life without her mother.
